Ramón Romero
As we end 2018 and begin a new year, we remember the incredible Paraguayan harpist, Ramón Romero.I had the honor of representing Ramón and his trio, Cuerdas de Fuego/Strings of Fire for many years.
Ramón began playing professionally when he was 12. At age 13, he built his first harp from guitar strings and an old window frame discarded during the renovation of the Presidential Palace in Asuncion, Paraguay. He toured internationally in Europe, Africa, South America, the Caribbean, and the United States. One concert in Abidjan, Ivory Coast was to be a 10-minute performance for King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, which, by the Queen's request, turned into a 45 minute set with an encore performance.
Ramon moved to the United States in 1990 and founded his touring trio, Cuerdas de Fuego in 2000.
In 2008, he was an Artist-in-Residence during a 3-month Fellowship, awarded by the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Program at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California.
Ramón had a true gift and passion for music. He was one with his harp.
His music lives on.
